CELEBRATIONS

Jeff Horwitz, our UDL Consultant from Novak Education, spent some time with our Guiding Coalition members and UDL Co-Hort teachers recently. We dug into self-reflection and flexible materials—key parts of UDL. Our district has been focusing on really getting to know UDL, why it matters, and diving deeper into two of the ten Focus Areas.

A big shout out to Brian Casey and Jami Parsons for letting us observe their 2nd and 3rd period classrooms! Both of them have been planning lessons with the goal of removing barriers so all students can access grade-level content. While some of us were observing lessons, the rest of the group took a walk through the school to find examples of how YOU are already supporting students with flexible materials and scaffolds to help them succeed.

We found tons of great examples! The big takeaway from yesterday was how valuable it is to look at how different teachers are using flexible materials—things that give students more options for how they access content and reach the learning goals. It was awesome to see how much is already happening in our classrooms.

If you chat with Conor, Kim E, Christy, Stephanie, Sean, Nate, or Roger, they’ll tell you how cool it was to visit other classrooms. It only took about 20 minutes, and having a clear task—finding and snapping pictures of flexible materials—made it super focused. When you have something specific to look for, it really helps narrow down what to pay attention to in the classroom.

Next time, we’d love to get more of you involved in these walk-throughs! It’s a great way to see what’s working, get new ideas, and learn from each other. If you would like to walk through classrooms and see for yourself, let Nicole or me know we will support you!







Big CONGRATS to JAZMIN!! She’s our NEW HEAD SECRETARY!!! Jazmin has already been diving into the role, working with the District Office staff to get a solid grasp on the head secretary duties. In just TWO days, she sorted through 46 invoices from the past few months, categorizing them correctly in the budget and getting everything squared away – and that’s just a small part of what she’s doing! :D Jazmin has also been supporting Janelle with Discipline entries, letters, and various tasks in BEAST SKYWARD. When I asked her what her vision for a head secretary is, she said, "Leadership, teamwork, collaboration, and organization." So excited to see all the great things she'll do!

NUTS-n-BOLTS

1.  Thank you to Chad for sending out communication around grades.  Last night at Millennials, Yaneth spoke to each student who had F's. They were told they needed to raise the grade to passing by Wednesday morning in order to play in the match between GMS and Pioneer Wednesday afternoon. I'll ask Janelle to send a list of students in Millennials so you have this information. 

2.    Career Fair tomorrow-packets in your mailbox. Please ask questions today!

3.    Monday the 31st during 6th grade science classes, counselors, secretaries and admin will be in to register students for electives. Please have the slides ready for when we come in. THANKS!  

    Tuesday, April 1st same routine only with 7th grade

4.  STAMP testing for 8th grade students only begins on Monday. Please review Yaz's email that was sent on March 26th. 

Our Dual students (Bahena & Fernandez) and some from Mr. Fernandez's Spanish 2 class will take the STAMP test in the library from Monday to Friday, March 31st–April 4th. Testing will take place in the afternoon during the 5th through 7th periods. Students will first check in with their 5th-period teacher before heading to the library. 

5. April 1st and 2nd the Pioneer and Garrison Admin teams will be doing our "5th to 6th grade Parent Meeting" Roadshow. We have advertised and sent flyers home with 5th grade families. We did have a great turn out at each school last year.

6. District Orchestra Festival tonight at 7:00PM in the WA HI Large Gym. Best of Luck to Caleb and his students!

7. When we return from spring break, we will be launching into end-of-year activities. The highlighted events are open for people to help plan.

We’ve got some fresh ideas for celebrations and awards, and we’d love your input! Nicole, Nicole, Steve, Yaneth, and I are the ones planning the event. Robin has kindly stepped in the last two years to help with the student speeches. 

Planning for school events is time consuming especially if you want it done right and not half-assed.  We will be sending out information for you to get involved.

We’re always open to suggestions because you have some awesome ideas! One thing I’d ask though: if you have something negative to say about an event, try holding off for 24 hours. We all tend to be reactive sometimes, but if we just pause and think it through, it can save a lot of trouble. Learn from my mistakes. :D

1. If you've had the pleasure of working with the legendary science teacher Peggy Willcuts, you know just how incredible her science expertise is! Here's a great opportunity to learn from her, earn clock hours, and enjoy some fishing!

As you know, STEM Clock Hours are hard to come by when you aren't a STEM or CTE teacher.  I am hosting the 4th Annual STEM Workshop this summer so teachers of all grade levels and of any subject area can get all 15 STEM Clock Hours in just 4 days.  It is facilitated by me and partners teachers with local scientists to study salmon habitat in a fun, easy learning environment.

4. Baby Pictures!! We want YOUR baby picture! Send it to both Nicole and me. This will be fun!!! As Nicole said, "This will replace our walk up songs from this school year." We are getting jump on this now because we still don't have everyone's walk up song for this year.😳

SOMETHING to PONDER

What if we approached certain routines in a unified way across content areas? Imagine this: anytime students are introduced to a new text—whether it’s an article, background reading, or the launch of a unit—they encounter the same predictable structure of annotating the text. We set the purpose, number the paragraphs, and follow a familiar routine. The experience becomes seamless across classes, removing one more hurdle and allowing them to focus more deeply on what they're reading, not how to approach it.

And what if structured academic conversations were consistent, too? Students would know exactly how to "turn and talk," not just in Dual Spanish or Social Studies, but in PE, band, or shop. Every subject invites students to think and talk together at some point—why not give them the tools to do that confidently no matter where they are?

I can imagine some of you are thinking, “Didn’t we used to do this?” You’re not wrong. There was a time when a whole school might rally around a note-taking strategy or a common vocabulary routine. It doesn’t have to be everything, but choosing a few key practices we all use could make a powerful difference.

Here are some of the benefits—and some of you have likely experienced these firsthand...

Benefits of Universal Strategies:

Consistency & Routine – Reduces student stress and helps them focus on learning, not figuring out new expectations.
Skill Transferability – Strengthens connections between subjects, reinforcing foundational literacy, problem-solving, and communication skills.
Equity & Accessibility – Provides a common framework that supports all learners, including those who need extra scaffolding.
Teacher Collaboration – Creates opportunities for cross-disciplinary planning and professional learning.

NUTS-n-BOLTS

1.  We've had several guest teachers in the building, and I'm happy to report fewer referrals. Reviewing your expectations has made a real difference! The routines, expectations, and management you set up before a guest teacher arrives truly pay off. Great job!

2.  FYI about a program that our District partners with BMAC.

Backpack Bridge Program

What is it?
The Backpack Bridge program, by Blue Mountain Action Council (BMAC), provides weekend meals to students in need.

Why help is needed?
The number of students relying on school food programs has increased, depleting BMAC’s supplies. Your donations directly support students who need it most.

How can you help?
Consider a financial donation to help BMAC purchase bulk supplies. Every contribution counts in ensuring no child goes hungry. Thank you!


2. The consistency with the voice amp system has definitely improved, and I appreciate everyone’s efforts. Just a reminder—this isn’t optional, as it’s crucial for helping students understand what the teacher is saying and for safety. If there’s ever imminent danger in the classroom, please use the safety button on the side. When that silent alarm goes off, we hear it in the office and drop everything to head your way right away.

3. Course Roll-Up is due tomorrow, 3/14/25! This spreadsheet is CRITICAL. We upload the data into Skyward, and it helps us determine how many course sections we’ll need for the 2025-2026 school year. The master schedule is built based on this information, so please ensure it’s accurate and complete.

4.  You know what next week is? YES-SPIRIT WEEK!!!

Tuesday- Twin Day, ROTC will also be guests in PE classes
Wednesday - Crocs, socks and Birkenstocks

5.  The custodians have noticed that the doors at the end of the 7th and 8th grade hallway have been unlocked. We are not sure how or why. Re keying the building is not an option, we asked. Please just double check the doors if you happen to be unlocking them.  THANK YOU!!

6. Installed in the office bathroom is a bidet toilet.  It has been installed for some of our students in the RISE program. It is a nice and the seat is HEATED! :D


Something to Ponder

Dr. Joe Sanfelippo, one of my favorite educational leaders, served as the superintendent of Fall Creek School District in Wisconsin. His "one-minute walks to work" involved him walking from his home to the school, offering reflections and challenges for leaders. The key takeaway: when Dr. Joe talks about leaders, he’s speaking to everyone, not just those with a title. We are all leaders in our own way. And of course, he always ends with, "We're all in this together! Go Crickets!" Sound familiar? 😉

CELEBRATIONS

Our Culture Night was a great success! We had so much delicious food from different backgrounds and cultures to share. Nicole guided families through the Dot Activity, which focused on inclusion. Two of our amazing parents also brought a fantastic art project for everyone to participate in. We’ll have it out at lunch and tomorrow afternoon. If you'd like to be part of this tapestry, take a few therapeutic minutes to weave your section. Once it’s finished, we’ll hang it up for all to admire with a special plaque.



Nuts-n-Bolts

1. During Tuesday's Ad Council meeting, Steve Rhinehart, our WWPS Cybersecurity Coordinator, shared some eye-opening information. The details are truly surprising! Please take some time to review the slides – the amount of money districts are spending on ransom to recover information is staggering!

2.  Freshman 101 on Monday 1:00-3:30 for 8th grade students. 8th grade teachers, you will be traveling with your 5th period classes. Steve and Nicole M are leads on this. Here is the schedule.  

3.  Certificated Staff FYI: This was in an email from Christy Krutulis. I wanted to make sure you saw it. 

Each year we receive an email about the Ellison Education Grant. Here is a link to the overview page which highlights the foundation's intent to award grants between $1,000-$10,000 dollars for the 2025-26 school year.

4. The Garrison Scheduling Team will meet tomorrow during the half day. Our main objective is to finalize the bell schedule. Afterward, we’ll focus on building the full schedule. As you know, Nancy is retiring, and she has taught six math sections. Similar to last year’s science staffing, we’ll need to collaborate to determine how to cover all the sections. While we’ll do our best to place the right people in the right roles, it may not align with everyone’s preferences. However, by working together, we’ll make it happen!

5.Please be on the lookout for emails from Nicole, Stephanie, and Jazmin regarding "rolling" students for next year. For example, a student in Compressed 6/7 Math would likely roll up to Compressed 7/8. This will apply to all content areas .Elective teachers, you created short videos last year about your electives. If you'd like to keep the same video, that's great! If not, you're welcome to create a new one. Please coordinate with Jazmin and Stephanie.

8.  Accountable for Learning -The Beast That Keeps Growing – When assigning a student to AFL, please make sure to communicate directly with the student(s) and confirm the assignment. If the student completes the work, checks in with you, and receives your approval, please notify Babett that the student is cleared. The issue we’re encountering is that some students get your approval, but then don’t show up to AFL, which results in a 'skip' being recorded.

SOEMTHING to PONDER

There are times in life when everything feels like it’s going great, and other times when it feels like the stars just won’t align. This week has been one of those challenging weeks for me. I came across a couple of short podcasts that really resonated with me, and here are the key takeaways:

  1. We all experience imposter syndrome at some point – questioning ourselves and wondering if we’re truly capable of doing the work we’re doing.
  2. It’s essential to find your tribe. Identify the people in your inner circle who you can lean on when you're facing a tough season.

My hope for each of you is that when you’re in a season of fog and gloom, you don't have to go through it alone. Keep going, don’t give up! Reach out and lean on your tribe.

Episode 78: In this episode, Illinois Superintendent Mike Lubelfeld, shares his experiences in dealing with the trauma of COVID-19, the impact of non-person vs. in-person learning, and the challenges of scaling e-learning with limited resources - all amid a mass shooting in his community.  Mike opens up about how all of this took a toll on him both mentally and physically. 

Episode 77 In this episode, Jimmy is joined by teacher Nick Ferroni, who reminds us that there is no such thing as a perfect teacher. However, every teacher is great at something—and even greater when they stop comparing themselves to others.
